After Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced in an address to the nation that  500 rupee notes and 1,000 rupee notes denomination are Banned (Bold and backlink) notes are being withdrawn from midnight. He said that such notes will become “mere paper” . PM Modi said this was being done to tackle the menace of black money in the country, which has sapped the economy.

The New 500 Rupee Note Features note will be called the Mahatma Gandhi series of bank notes and they also carry a picture of Delhi’s Red Fort. The New 2000 rupee note that is being introduced carries an image of the Mangalyaan to celebrate India’s Mars mission.

People have taken government’s decision to cancel the 500 rupee notes and 1000 rupee notes “a very bold, powerful and decisive step” to fight black money.

RBI chief Urijit Patel today revealed what the new 500 rupee note  and 2000 rupee notes will look like, announcing that these will be launched on Thursday, November 10.

On 9th November, there will be a bank holiday and the treasury will also be closed. Mr Urjit Patel said the production of the new high denomination notes had been ramped up “as of today and over the past months, hence it was decided to introduce the scheme that the PM has announced.

Control rooms are being set up at the Reserve Bank and the Department of Economic affairs in the finance ministry to help in the transition.

What to do with old 500 and 1000 rupee notes?

So now what will you do with old currency? Well, you can deposit them at banks or post offices – starting tomorrow and till the end of the year. You can trade them – for a maximum of Rs. 4,000 (Friday to November 24) and for larger amounts after that. Starting Friday, you can make withdrawals to get new notes. At a bank, you are limited to Rs. 10,000 a day and Rs. 20,000 a week.

You can also use ATMs to get the new notes up to Rs. 2,000 a day, starting on Friday. Take Aadhaar card and PAN Card when you go to exchange notes after December 30, these can be deposited at the Reserve Bank with a declaration. Tourists can change the notes at airports.

Till 11th November, the following government-authorised places and institutions will continue to accept Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes for payment:

  •  Hospitals
  • Railway, airline, bus ticket booking counters
  • Petrol, diesel and gas stations authorised by public sector oil companies
  • Consumer co-operative stores
  • Milk booths
  • Crematoriums and burial grounds
